Jesus Christ Is The Fully Divine Son Of God

He Is Both Fully God And Fully Man

Validating Jesus As God, The Son

From Jesus Was A Real Person we know Jesus Christ was a real, flesh and blood human who existed in the 1st century AD but how do we know for certain that he was also fully God?  If your faith in Jesus is strong then you’re blessed but it’s only natural to question this in your heart from time to time.  As a believer in Jesus, your justification in God is not threatened by such questioning so if you have doubts or questions then perhaps some facts about Christ will help put your heart and mind at ease.

The evidence presented here very clearly leads to the conclusion that Jesus Christ is, in fact, the divine Son of God – both fully man and fully God.  We’ll begin with an overview of 5 sets of evidence in this 9 minute video from Real Truth Real Quick and then dive in a bit deeper.

Core Evidence Demonstrating Jesus Is God

Evidence Jesus Is God

Five sets of evidence in the Bible

  1. Jesus possessed divine attributes
    • He is eternal, always-present, all-knowing, all-powerful, unchanging, holy, and sinless
  1. Jesus asserted he was God
  2. Jesus has divine authority
    • He forgives sins, raised the dead, was raised from the dead, and accepts worship
  3. Jesus’ enemies accused him of claiming to be God
  4. Jesus was affirmed by New Testament writers
    • The earliest disciples taught that he was God

More On Jesus’ Supernatural Attributes

As noted above, Jesus possessed divine attributes that demonstrated his holiness. Here is a 3 1/2 minutes video from the John Ankerberg Show presenting a complementary set of 4 holy traits that Jesus also possessed.

Uniqueness of Jesus

4 holy traits of Jesus

  • Jesus never sinned
  • He possessed a spiritual radar for sin, especially internal sins hidden from the outside, and he rebuked people for them
  • He strongly rebuked the religious leaders of his day and also his own apostles because of their sins
  • He lived a life of humble service and preached a revolutionary message based around that

Here are 14 more supernatural traits, capabilities, and teachings of Jesus that demonstrate both his divine nature and his revolutionary life.

  • Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit as communicated to Mary by the angel Gabriel
  • He came as the Messiah sent by God but with a manner and message completely different than expected by Jews and their leaders
  • He professed a revolutionary kingdom of God where the last would be first and the first would be last
  • He proclaimed his message of hope to sinners, unclean gentiles, and the downtrodden
  • He preached a message of love and forgiveness for our neighbors and for our enemies
  • He proclaimed the authority of God
  • He performed many miracles including raising the dead, healing the profoundly ill, walking on water, quelling storms, casting out demons and producing fish and bread to serve thousands
  • He taught the people primarily with parables so that only those “with ears to hear” would understand his message
  • He prophesied his own death, the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of times
  • He allowed himself to be put to death according to God’s commandment
  • He rose from the dead and appeared to hundreds
  • He commissioned his disciples to proclaim his message to the whole world
  • Jesus specifically appeared to Paul and James after his death so that they would become principle leaders of the church taking his message to the world
  • He ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God
  • Because of his commission, Jesus’ disciple Peter possessed the authority of God and was able to raise a girl from death

Jesus Proclaimed Himself As God And Claimed Authority Equal With God

Jesus avoided widely asserting his divinity until he had completed his ministry.  However, during his ministry in private and in small groups he attested to being one with God.  Here is a 6 minute video from Jon Oleksiuk presenting 33 Bible verses in which Jesus asserts his divinity and asserts his authority as equal with God’s.

Summary of the Bible verses demonstrating Jesus knew he was God

  • Jesus declared himself one with God by stating God is his father
  • He says he is the Son of God
  • He shares life and knowledge with the Father
  • He says he existed before Abraham by using “I Am” just as God did with Moses
  • He said “I and the Father are one.”
  • He says he’s the “Son of the Blessed One”
  • He is the Son of Man who will come on the clouds of heaven
  • He will sit at the right hand of God

Jesus Said He Was God

Jesus claimed equal authority with God by:

  • Forgiving sins
  • Being the judge of all people
  • Encouraging worship in his own name
  • Offering salvation from sin in his own name

God Himself Proclaims Jesus As His Son

On two occasions God declares majestically from heaven that Jesus is His son.  The first time is right after Jesus is baptized.  Matthew, Mark and Luke all attest to God saying, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.”  Later, when Jesus is transfigured in front of a few disciples, God declares, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.

These are significant because they represent the only two times in the New Testament that God, the Father, speaks directly from heaven – apart from in a vision to John beginning in Revelation 1:11.  In all other cases either Jesus or the Holy Spirit do the talking.

Frankly, considering the accuracy and reliability of the Bible demonstrated elsewhere, these very clear verses are the most important and most certain validation that Jesus is the divine Son of God who shares in all of God’s authority and is one with God.

Jesus Fulfilled Dozens Of Old Testament Prophesies About The Messiah

In The Bible Is The Inspired Word Of God we see several examples of Old Testament prophesy that came true – in some cases hundreds of years after they were foretold.  Those prophesies helped validate the assertion that the Bible is the inspired word of God.  In this article we will specifically drill into Old Testament prophesies about the coming messiah and see dozens that point to Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of those prophesies.

There are some who say more than 350 Old Testament prophesies of the coming messiah point specifically to Jesus.  Here is a 5 minute video from Ligonier Ministries highlighting 45 of those prophesies – perhaps the most clear of the 300.  The first two minutes of the video highlight non-messianic prophesies like those we see in the other article.  As you watch the second part of the video note, first of all, he describes all 45 messianic prophesies fulfilled by Jesus in just two minutes – an amazing feat.  Secondly, focus on those prophesies that Jesus could choose to fulfill versus those that he had no control over.  For instance, note the list doesn’t include ones that Jesus could very obviously choose to fulfill like the famous one from Zachariah 9:9 predicting the messiah would enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey.  Of the 45, Jesus could only choose to fulfill perhaps 6 to 9.  Jesus had no control of the remaining three dozen messianic prophesies that he fulfilled.

A final point to consider, once you’ve watched the video, is these prophesies help reiterate that the Bible is one continuous and cohesive story of redemption with God.  Jesus Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of that redemption story as described and predicted in the Old Testament.

  • Anointed with the Holy Spirit
  • Starts his ministry in Galilee
  • Teaches with parables, working miracles
  • Rejected by his Jewish brethren

  • Not a bone is broken
  • He would be pierced
  • He would be buried with the rich
  • He’d be raised from the dead and ascend to God the Father

The previous video very quickly presented key Old Testament messianic prophesies fulfilled by Jesus.  In this 9 minute video, Dr. Ted Hildebrandt pursues several of those prophesies in more depth.  Here are some select highlights:

  • Seed of the woman will come to crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15)
  • Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son… God with us (Isaiah 7:14)
  • But you, O Bethlehem … from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel (Micah 5:2)
  • Messiah Ben Joseph (the suffering messiah) vs Messiah Ben David (the conquering messiah)
    • How Jesus arrived per Isaiah 53 vs the expectation of religious leaders of the day

Prophesy Deep Dive

Nearly the entire text of Isaiah 53 is comprised of messianic prophesies that are fulfilled by Jesus Christ.  It’s a very short chapter – only 12 verses – so take the time to read it now.
